A2 Internal and External Recruitment

Internal recruitment is when an organisation fills a vacant position with an existing member of staff.

Benefits of internal recruitment include it being faster and cheaper, the firm is already familiar with the strengths of the candidate, the person is already familiar with the organisation so can become productive faster and promotional opportunities can be motivating for staff. Drawbacks include the lack of new skills and ideas bring brought into the organisation, the smaller pool of applicants to choose from and resentment from the members of staff who don’t get the job.

External recruitment is when an organisation fills a vacant position with a person who does not already work at the firm.

Benefits of external recruitment include having a wider pool of applicants to choose from and the new skills, ideas and energy being brought into the firm. Drawbacks include it being a longer and more expensive recruitment process and the lack of knowledge about the new recruit.
