Business growth is often desirable due to economies of scale, financial security and brand recognition. However the owners do need to give up control and may find themselves unable to perform the business activity that appealed to them in the first place.

Business size can have an impact on the support given, e.g. government grants. Different countries have different measures of business size. Some of the measures used in the UK are below

Micro- Up to 9 staff

SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises):

• Small - 10 - 49 staff. Medium - 50 - 249 staff

Large - 250 staff and above
