B1 Matrix Organisational Structures

Where there are two or more chains of command in an organisation, a matrix structure can be formed. This may happen in project-based organisations where each project has a manager who coordinates staff from different functional areas. Each functional area will also have a manager so a member of staff may report to their project manager and the manager of their functional area. Staff may be allocated to multiple project teams.

Benefits

  • Flexibility between projects

  • Efficiency through direct project management

  • Innovation through changing team members

  • Motivation through changing work tasks

Limitations

  • Staff can feel overwhelmed

  • Inefficiencies through lack of expertise when switching teams

  • Conflicting priorities
