D1 Motivation in the Workplace

Motivation theory refers to studies into human behaviour and what drives people to behave in certain ways. In terms of business, this is often applied to understanding what makes people more productive at work. Various studies have taken place leading to some popular motivation theories. These include Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, Herzberg Two Factor Theory, Taylor’s Scientific Theory and Mayo’s management Theory.

Impact of Motivation on Business Performance

Motivated staff work harder which increases productivity

Less absenteeism increases productivity

Lower turnover reduces the need to recruit and train new staff

Motivated workers care about the quality of their work which improves the quality of the final product

Customer service improves which can improve brand image

Collaboration between workers can improve due to a positive culture which can lead to better idea generation
